Kress died on Sept. 19, shortly after turning 60, of complications due to liver cancer. Sitting in the downstairs family room of his Upper East Side brownstone on a crisp Sunday afternoon in November, Martin Scorsese, who turns 69 on Nov. 17, is as buoyant and thoughtful as always. He only knows that the producers are pushing him to get this thing started, now. A dutiful artist, Scorsese dives in with help from his real-life frequent first assistant director Joe Reidy, only to notice that standing to the side of the set is a very famous older director. This mystery director is someone real, and great, but Scorsese, upon waking, never remembers who it is. The guy's presence unnerves him, and he says so to the producers. "Don't worry," he's told. "He's just here to observe. It's your thing." The anonymous dream director could be Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa, Michael Powell, Satyajit Ray, Orson Welles, Jean Renoir -- any of the icons Scorsese has revered and chased with his art for decades. "But I knew that he was probably going to take over what I was doing," Scorsese continues in hushed tones. "And slowly but surely, they say, 'You know, if you could just sit down, we'll let him handle this scene. ...''" HE JUST WALKED HIS DAUGHTER DOWN THE AISLE His middle girl, Domenica Cameron-Scorsese, born right after he made Taxi Driver, a product of his marriage to Julia Cameron, was married Nov. 11 in Chicago. The milestone has shaken him; his voice softens, and he fumbles to explain the feelings it brought up. "It was very moving, but ... she's our little one," he says. "It was kind of surreal, I didn't quite ... understand that it was actually happening in real time. I still can't quite grasp it. This is very good for my daughter and everything; she married a sweet young gentleman. But it starts something new. Your concern is in a different way now for them. There's not much you can do. You can help however you can, but you're older, you'll be dying. You're not going to be around. And this is it." HOW SCORSESE'S $100 MILLION-PLUS 3D HUGO HAPPENED Scorsese was quite drawn to a film adaptation of Brian Selznick's 2007 novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Ostensibly a family film, the 3D Hugo is just as much an exploration of the power of cinema and the lost legacy of seminal artist George Melies. Producer Graham King, who financed the movie through his GK Films, first optioned the novel with Johnny Depp when both had production deals at Warner Bros., months before Scholastic Press even published the book in January 2007. (The project eventually migrated to Sony, then Paramount, in search of a Thanksgiving holiday slot; it opens Nov. 23). Scorsese and King already were talking about turning it into a feature together when they won Oscars for The Departed, the same weekend that Cabret hit No. 1 on The NY Times best-seller list. While John Logan, who had written The Aviator for Scorsese, worked to nail down a script, Scorsese went off to make Shutter Island for Paramount. Other filmmakers were interested in Hugo, but King waited. When Scorsese had completed Shutter Island and was finally free to tackle Hugo in the summer of 2010, he told King that he wanted to try shooting in 3D for the first time. Although the cameras and extra tech crew would add 15 percent to the $100 million-plus budget, King felt the 3D would also create an intriguing marketing hook: a vaunted old-school filmmaker taking on the newest of technologies. SCORSESE'S CHILDHOOD SHAPED HIS FILMMAKING Scorsese traces his devotion to film preservation and restoration back to the emotional limitations of his childhood. The younger of two brothers in a very Old World immigrant NY family that lived in Queens and then the Lower East Side tenements, he repeatedly was told to keep his childish opinions to himself. As an asthma sufferer, he was always sick, which meant sports and pets were off limits, leaving him with an external and internal life that only could be opened in a movie theater. "It really opened up things that I wasn't allowed to say much," Scorsese says. "I wasn't allowed to express my feelings about anybody or anything. These emotions and these questions that were being asked in my head and in my heart, a lot of this was being addressed in the films I saw." HOW A BAMBI MOVIE OUTING CHANGED HIM From a very early age, Scorsese was watching everything from Singin' in the Rain to Italian neo-realist cinema. His Aunt Mary once took him and a cousin to see a rerelease of Bambi at the Forest Hills Theater in Queens, only to have to first sit through the 1947 film noir Out of the Past. "I was way too young for that one," Scorsese says with an eye roll. "I was saying to my aunt, 'When's Bambi coming on?' She said, 'Shut up, this is good.' The imagery stayed with me, that crazy poetic mood. It was really art." But On the Waterfront broke through in a way that none of the others had before -- he saw his hard-working uncles and cousins in every frame of Elia Kazan's 1954 masterpiece. "It was literally as if the camera was in my apartment or on the street corner with us," he says. "All of this meant a great deal to me and connected me with the outside world." HIS MOVIE MEAN STREETS HAD PERSONAL CONSEQUENCES By his mid-20s, Scorsese had graduated from film school and was looking to put his own experiences on the screen, most notably in his 1973 crime drama Mean Streets. But the fallout of expressing his personal world in public ended up stinging him. "I had repercussions on that," he says in a clipped manner that suggests the memory is still fresh for him. "Family and friends who were insulted." SCORSESE LOVE FOR CLASSICS SPAWNED A 'DIRECTOR WHO'S WHO' CLUB Once he found his own voice as a filmmaker, he and peers like Steven Spielberg couldn't find decent prints of the movies that had fed them as kids, and they began a campaign to convince the studios that these classics had value. "They didn't realize that to a whole generation, these were more than just commodities," he says. "It was part of who we are. It was part of everyone who has any relationship with cinema. This is something we started to get militant about. 'You may own them,' I said. 'But in actuality, you're custodians for a culture.' In 1990, along with Spielberg, George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Sydney Pollack and others, he formed the nonprofit Film Foundation, and in 2007 he created the World Cinema Foundation to extend the organization's restoration work to foreign films. "To pass it on, that's the key thing," he says. SCORSESE YOUNGEST DAUGHTER INSPIRED HIM TO MAKE HUGO One byproduct of spending more time with his 12-year-old daughter Francesca -- Scorsese's two other daughters, Catherine and Domenica, are more than 20 years older -- is that it helped convince him to make a family film out of Hugo. "You deal with them every day so that you're made to understand actually how they perceive the world around them, even from the level of their height," he says. "It's a different way of living entirely. But the thing about it is then [doing Hugo] seemed natural. It didn't seem like a stretch. Being around children, I'm very comfortable with them now." As it happens, Scorsese's birthday is just a day after Francesca's (hers is Nov. 16), and he feigns exasperation that she gets top billing on their annual combined party. "She gets all the attention now," he says. "I've taken her aside a few times, as they say. I gave her the word: Watch it." Though the director admits that the downstairs family room is Francesca's turf. Although he takes an iPod everywhere, Scorsese says he doesn't get to play his music in her zone. "Oh, no," he says with mock seriousness, "no, no," as if he were a scared flunky working for a mob boss. On occasion, he admits that he'll stroll through humming Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" and get Francesca hooked. SCORSESE ON HIS OWN LEGACY Thirty years ago, Kiss Me Deadly director Robert Aldrich sent a letter after seeing Raging Bull that said, "In years to come, that'll be the one to be remembered." "I prize that letter," Scorsese says, then mulls the possibility with a mix of skepticism and hope. "The reality is, for people who create anything, you always want to be remembered," he says "You could be remembered for a year, a hundred years, you could be remembered for two thousand years, but eventually everything goes. You just have to accept that. First, it may not stand the test of time. And if it doesn't, you did the best you could. You may have affected certain people's lives -- maybe. Kavanaugh: B.O. becoming 'somewhat irrelevant'

Relativity topper Ryan Kavanaugh said on Tuesday that his studio looks to 'cover most of our risk before we hit domestic box.'Box office is no longer the single-most important factor in determining a film's overall success, Relativity Media topper Ryan Kavanaugh told Variety's Future of Film summit Tuesday. "When studios were first created in the 1920s and '30s, all you had was box office," Kavanaugh said. "All you had to report on, and all you had to judge on was the box office. The practical reality is -- box office is 20% of the pie and it's somewhat irrelevant." Kavanaugh, who spoke to Variety's Peter Caranicas in the keynote address at the confab held at Hollywood and Highland, pointed to a lack of transparency in the film financing world. Noting the decline in home video revenue, the economy, and the new models of film financing, Kavanaugh said that bizzers need to look beyond the box office to really gauge a film's performance. "It's hard to say this without insulting the press a little bit," Kavanaugh said cautiously, "but there's a whole new world today of studios, ourselves being one of them, that look to cover most of our risk before we hit domestic box." Tax incentives and output deals -- the latter of which Kavanaugh says Relativity has in all but three countries -- help mitigate that risk. Relativity tries to have three-quarters of a film's risk covered before it goes into production, he said. Kavanaugh also noted that paying creative talent scale -- as opposed to gross participation -- can help a lot. He noted that was the tack Relativity took with helmer Steven Soderbergh on the upcoming pic "Haywire." "Our motto from day one was always that the idea of gross participation don't make sense," Kavanaugh said. "And the reason they don't make sense is that you're basically saying, 'Even if I lose money I'm going to pay you a bonus.' And there's really no other business that we could find that does that." Finances aside, Kavanaugh noted that sometimes one of the biggest challenges is making a film that will appeal to auds, even if it's not in sync with his own taste. Following its surprisingly strong debut against Game 7 of the World Series last week, NBC’s new fairytale-themed drama Grimm (1.8/5 in 18-49, 5.92 million viewers) dropped a modest 14% in its second airing. It won the 9 PM hour in the demo and ranked as the second highest rated program of the night behind the CBS drama Blue Bloods. Things looked much gloomier for NBC’s departing dramedy Chuck (0.8/3, 3.1 million), which was the lowest-rated and least watched program on the Big 4, down 20% in the demo from its season premiere last week. Dateline (1.2/4, 4.1 million) closed out the night for NBC, down a tenth from last week. Grimm seems to be hurting CSI:NY in the 9 PM slot. The veteran CBS crime drama (1.6/5, 9.7 million) was down 11% in 18-49 from its last original 2 weeks. Blue Bloods (2.1/6, 12.6 million) was up a big 24% from the fast national for its last original. (Blue Bloods is usually adjusted up in the finals.) The cop family drama was the top program of the night and helped CBS (1.6/5, 10.2 million) win the night despite another soft outing by rookie A Gifted Man (1.2/4, even, 8.4 million), which didn’t make a strong case for a back order. (But may get a partial one anyway.) Fox’s Kitchen Nightmares (1.5/5) and Fringe (1.3/4) were both up a tenth from their most recent episodes. ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition rebounded from having to face the conclusion of the World Series last week. The 8 PM episode (1.2/4) was up 20%, the 9 PM one (1.4/4) up 27%. At 10 PM, 20/20 (1.1/3) was down a tenth. The CW’s Nikita and Supernatural held steady.

When it opened earlier this year, I had high praise for director Chris Weitz and star Demian Bichir, who I think delivers one of the finest performances of the year as an illegal immigrant looking to provide a positive future for his 14-year-old son. In an interview with Weitz, I praised the film and the director's steady hand with material that could have easily gone maudlin or condescending.Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the DVD release party for the film, hosted by Mary-Louise Parker at Culina. It took me a second to make the connection, but of course, Bichir played Parker's lover on the Showtime series "Weeds." Like anyone who loves great actors, I've long held Parker in high regard. But until I saw her in person that night, I had no idea how unbelievably stunning she is in person. She was also very gracious and affable, and went out of her way to thank us for coming. 'Gossip Girl,' 'Vampire Diaries' Go to Netflix Under Four-Year Streaming Licensing Deal with CW

"We believe the deal was structured in a way that benefits all parties (CBS/TW/CW) and at the same time keep CW "alive" as it is probably viewed by both TW and CBS as a decent platform to launch shows, despite it being a loss generator," said RBC Capital Markets analyst David Bank. Under the Netflix deal, which is believed to be worth up to around $1 billion over time, with the final value determined over time by the performance of the CW programs, Netflix has licensed the rights to stream more than 700 hours of previous-season episodes of The CW's young-skewing dramas as well as future programs. "This loss could narrow materially" with the Netflix deal, he said, estimating that the revenue recognized by each company could be around $50 million per year on average with a big portion of that dropping to the bottom line. Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne said the deal "could equate to 4-5 cents (about 2 percent) in earnings per share upside for CBS and 1-2 cents (less than one percent) of earnings per share upside for TW in 2012." Lazard Capital Markets analyst Barton Crockett also highlighted "slight accretion potential (all else equal) next year for TW - circa 6 cents, or 2 percent" per share. "The money-losing CW may also retain a minority of the Netflix fee, helping reduce its losses, which would lift the conglomerates via equity" in the joint venture, he added. "While this deal creates a new window, we think the content involved here fits the model and provides financial support for the CW that might not be available otherwise," echoed Wells Fargo analyst Marci Ryvicker. She also estimated the deal's value at around $1 billion. "Given that the CW is a 50:50 joint venture...the accounting is somewhat complex," she added. "We believe that this deal cuts CW's losses in half, and we estimate this deal could add about three to fives cents to earnings per share for CBS annually." Episodes of all scripted series airing on the CW this broadcast season will premiere for Netflix members in the fall of 2012, the companies said. "Not only will we will be able to recruit new viewers for our shows through thepowerful reach of Netflix, but it also makes The CW an even more attractive option to the creative community," CW president Mark Pedowitz said about the arrangement. "There is now a much more viable array of platforms and we don't think about it in terms of analog and digital anymore," Bruce Rosenblum, president, Warner Bros. Television Group and Office of the President, told the Hollywood Reporter. The deal was in the works for several months, with Hulu and other online distributors also in the running for the CW's content before Netflix sealed the deal. "We don't believe there was a first-mover advantage," Rosenblum said when asked about the timing of the agreement, which follows other content providers' deals with online distributors. "We took our time to see how things would play out, and now there is more competition and better pricing." Other executives at the conglomerates that co-own the CW also lauded the Netflix agreement as a positive for their companies. Motion Picture Academy Leaders Hype New LACMA Movie Museum Plans: All The Pieces Fit Together

Just when you thought it was a dead duck, it’s back and quacking. For those who have had the dream of a world class movie museum coming to fruitionin L.A.,film capital of the world(countme in on that), last night’s announcement that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and the Los Angeles County Museum of Arthave begun the process of finally making that dream come true is good news all around. Andthat longtime dream museum, which was turning intomore of a nightmare for the Academy, is going to beright down the street from the Acad’s own Beverly Hills headquarters (at least that’s the plan). The Academy issaying the project housed in the historic old May Co. on Wilshire Blvd now known as LACMA West will take three to five years to complete. “We are on the fast track but it will be determined by fund raising,” said the Acad’s new CEO Dawn Hudson, who spoke with me todayin a conference callwith Academy President Tom Sherak and LACMA CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director Michael Govan. Hudson wasn’t throwing out official figures but says she expects it will cost less than half the rough estimate of $480 million that the Academy had targeted for their earlier foiledplan to erect this museum in Hollywood where theyspent about$50 million so far buying land (which theynow own outright) near their Pickford Center on Vine Street. But the idea to house the museum instead at the already existing 300,000-square-foot space on Wilshire actually goes back decades when it was even broached by former Academy Presidents Walter Mirisch and Bob Rehme. It heated up again about a year and a half ago with a casual conversation between another Govan and another former Academy President Sid Ganis, who then introduced the museum head to Sherak and then CEO Bruce Davis. “For about an hour and a half I did something I rarely do. I just listened to someone talk who had a vision and a dream about what this could mean to the City of Los Angeles to bring different art forms, especially our two art forms together in one place,” said Sherak, who emphasized that the Board wanted a museum in their lifetime but that the Academy didn’t know how long it would take them to raise the money and build one themselves. Govan came to the rescue. “Being in the museum world, I see film programs at museums in Paris and Frankfurt. I wanted that in Los Angeles and I knew the Academy had a dream and they had a great resource. So the question was what could we offer to help and that was the beginning of the conversation,” said Govan. Sherak explained the Board approved further exploring the alliance with LACMA and put a committee together. But after June 1 when Davis retired and Hudson arrived, things really started moving. Before she lefther previous job,Hudson forged an alliance with LACMA and Govan in which Film Independent would take overrunning themuseum’s troubled film program so she already knew him and sparked immediately to the new museum idea. “It was like going to target practice and hitting the bulls-eye 15 times in a row. Before anybody knew it, including me, there were budgets, and she was like Road Runner. Next thing I knew we were all in a room and finally negotiated an M.O.U. (Memorandum of Understanding) and he presented it to his Board and we presented to our Board last night and we decided we were gonna see a museum in our lifetime,” said a clearly energized Sherak. The significant process cannot come at a better time as it seemsmajor collections that conceivably might have been a part of the new museum are going on the block and being sold piecemeal to private collectors, many out of the country.Seven hundred items from the John Wayne estate including keycostumes, awards, scripts and personal documents are going for auction this weekend, while Debbie Reynolds is continuing to sell off her invaluable collection of costumes after fruitless attempts to get a museum going herself. “Not that I could say to you that we ever could have bought the Debbie Reynolds collection as a whole. We couldn’t have done that. The collection’s worth a lot of money, you would have had to put an oil well up,” said Sherak. But Hudson wants to emphasize what the Academy already has on its own. “As you well know the Academy has made a lot of investment over the years in building this world-class archive and film library like none other so now our year-round work will have a home, a place to display it, a distillation of all the Academy’s missions that the general public doesn’t know enough about, ” said Hudson in pointing out that there is much more to the organization than just the Oscars. “We have 42,000 movie posters and 10 million catalogued movie photographs. We have such beautiful artifacts of our film history and there hasn’t been a public place to see those or access those.” Sherak points out the Academy is always looking out for acquisitions. “We have more stuff stored than Carter has liver pills. The bottom line is we never stop doing that. And it is in all facets of the business from the first printing press of motion picture one-sheets. We have stuff stored that would spin your head, that nobody knows about. It’s a continuing thing for us,” he says. And Govan thinks the new museum will even breed more. “From a museum perspective I personally have talked toa lot of people about the artifacts and posters and things they have and I think there’s that sense that if there were a museum people would donate. Cities build great museums and people feel like there’s a home for the objects they have cared for during their life and they know the public can benefit from that,” he says. Sherak also wants to make clear they have not abandoned the Hollywood site (although I am toldkey figures at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce were caught by surprise — and not happy campers — when they read todayof the Academy’s proposednew locationfor their museum). “We own that land. It’s ours free and clear and we’re now in the process of spending money to raze those buildings and to make it a place to go. We’ll probably do some exhibits there. We’ll do some stuff with the land. I’ve always had this dream of running an outdooor theatre there which I really believe in. We’re definitely in Hollywood. The Pickford Center sits there. We’re invested. We’re not going anywhere. The plan is to make that land useful to us,” Sherak says. But clearly the momentum has moved from Hollywood to the historic building that sits on the corner of Wilshire and Fairfax and which was built in 1939, the year many still feel was the greatest ever for the movies. “It just seemed like the timing was right,” Hudson said. “All the pieces fit together.”

But the guy across the landing from her apartment, Colin (Evans), who beds a different bimbo each night, has a family in the police business and a natural instinct for finding anybody. EXCLUSIVE: Anna Faris Sells Stalker Comedy Project to Paramount Okay, so you know instantly how this is going to play out, but the playing-out is the whole fun. The two confab about Ally's various past "exes," she ambushes a few for comic sequences, Ally & Colin become real friends, her sister's wedding has its own comic bumps, and then there's the melodrama about dad (Ed Begley Jr.) showing up at the wedding and just how much this will upset Ally's patrician mom (Blythe Danner). To paraphrase Noel Coward, it's extraordinary how potent cheap rom-com is. None of this should play well. It does because Faris and Evans work hard to make it look easy. Faris is oft compared to Lucille Ball,but why not? She's got the beauty, awkwardness and guile down pat. She absolutely makes this movie, which would otherwise be exasperating. Her timing is impeccable and her enthusiasm contagious. Evans' role is more subservient to the heroine and would get lost with a less personable and accomplished comic actor. He definitely plays second fiddle to Faris, but what an orchestra they make. STORY: 'Captain America's Chris Evans Talks 'Avengers' Co-Stars and 'Raging Insecurity' The rest of the movie has good and bad points -- mostly good. The supporting cast does what it should, excellent use is made of Boston locations nicely blended with a superior interior set -- designer Jon Billington, take your bow --- and the writers and director achieve a nice nonchalance in how the story unfolds. Mild vulgarity and discreet nudity garner the sought-after R rating, but this effort feels forced. The real "bad" here is the sheer formulaic nature of everything. There are no surprises but for once you don't much mind. There are more than four weddings in the movie, but no funerals so a happy ending is assured. In fact, that may be the worst "bad" here. There was room for a more ambiguous ending, maybe one that found the movie's Darling wondering what No. 22 might be like.
