J. Cole tops album chart

Rapper J. Cole makes his chart debut in style as his "Cole World: The Sideline Story" arrives at No. 1 on the U.S. album roll this week. The Jay-Z protg's Roc Nation/Columbia set debuts with 218,000 sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures for the week ending Oct. 2. It's the biggest solo bow of the year to date. Rock threesome Blink-182 is back in the top 10 after a long hiatus as their "Neighborhoods" (DGC) takes No. 2 with 151,000 sold. Group issued self-titled set in 2003 before taking an indefinite break. Guitarist Tom DeLonge's side project Angels & Airwaves is also issuing a new set, "Love Part One & Part Two," on Nov. 15. Adele's "21" (Columbia) sits tight at No. 3 with another six-figure frame, rolling up 118,000 (up 1%); the singer canceled another round of U.S. dates on Tuesday. Last week's No. 1 entry, Tony Bennett's "Duets II" (Columbia), drops to No. 4 with a 91,000-unit week (off 49%). Chicago band and critic's darling Wilco reach No. 5 with "The Whole Love," shifting 82,000. Set is group's first on their own independent dBpm imprint (distributed by Anti) after eight major label releases. Lacking the huge single that propelled last year's "Need You Now," country trio Lady Antebellum's "Own the Night" (Capitol Nashville) continues to fade, falling four rungs to No. 6 with 75,000 sold (down 40%). Lil Wayne's "Tha Carter IV" (Cash Money), which slips two poles to No. 7 (68,000 sold, down 20%), is trailed by three new releases. "Vice Verses" (Atlantic), latest from San Diego's Christian-bred band Switchfoot, takes No. 8 with a 45,000-unit week, outdoing its 2009 set "Hello Hurricane," which topped out at No. 13. All-star hard rock act Chickenfoot moves in at No. 9 with "Chickenfoot III" (E1). Foursome of Van Halen's Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani and Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith opened with a 42,000-unit tally. Another heavy unit, Atlanta metal band Mastodon, hit No. 10 with "The Hunter" (Reprise), which tracked 39,000. It's the group's first top 10 album.
